Cataract Surgery

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is formed when the natural lens within the eye becomes cloudy or opaque.

What is the treatment?

A cataract can be removed by an operation; it is then replaced with a clear lens implant. Implants have been used for many years and are safe, stable and long lasting.

How quickly is sight restored?

Some improvement in your vision should be apparent the day after surgery. Clarity will increase over a further period of time.

When is surgery appropriate for you?

Cataracts can seriously affect the quality of your life. If your GP or Optician has diagnosed a cataract and it is interfering with your daily life e.g. reading, watching TV, driving, or intricate hobbies like knitting, sewing or craft, it may be time to consider surgery. Occasionally cataract surgery may not be effective but the reasons for this will be explained to you by your consultant at your initial consultation. As with everything in life there are risks associated with cataract surgery and in spite of all our efforts to minimise the chances of these, complications may sometimes occur.

What are the benefits of having your surgery at a Ramsay Hospital?

  • No waiting lists
  • First class medical facilities
  • Excellent local specialists
  • Experienced, professional staff
  • Individualised nursing care
  • Private room (with en suite facilities)

How do I obtain cataract surgery?

After diagnosis by your GP or Optician you will need to be referred to a Consultant Ophthalmologist (Eye Surgeon) for an outpatient clinic appointment. Your surgeon will discuss the operation with you and the technique that will be used to remove the cataract.

If you decide to proceed with the surgery, pre-operative tests will be organised, i.e. your eye will be measured for your individual lens implant.

A date for your operation will be arranged at a time convenient to you.

How long will I stay in hospital?

You will be invited to come in to hospital on the day of your operation. It is likely that you will be able to go home either later on the same day or after an overnight stay.
